Recovery for Life: Adult Substance Abuse

1-760-726-4900

THE NEED:

Among the 20 million adults in the U.S. who experienced a substance use disorder, more than 50%—10 million adults—had a co-occurring mental illness.

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

Recovery for Life is a trauma informed out-patient substance abuse and co-occurring treatment program. Recovery for Life works to put clients on the path to recovery through comprehensive services that include treatment of substance use disorders and case management to address the underlying issues that led to the individual’s involvement in the justice system.

PROGRAM SERVICES:

Substance abuse and any co-occurring mental health disorders are treated through evidence-based clinical and social model recovery approaches. Case management services focus on developing self-sufficiency skills by addressing:

  • Employment services and job readiness
  • Education assistance
  • Assistance navigating public agencies, including the Justice System, Probation, and Child Welfare; and in applying for available benefits
  • Housing navigation to ensure that clients remain stably housed after program completion

WHO WE HELP:

Recovery for Life is for individuals impacted by Proposition 47, a law that reduces some felonies, including drug-related and theft-related offenses to misdemeanors.

STORY:

Ramon is a 31 year-old single parent with two young children. When he was referred to the Recovery for Life program, Ramon was in legal trouble, had nowhere to live, and no income.

Ramon has proven that he is dedicated to changing his life. He is participating in Recovery for Life’s outpatient substance abuse program and is working with a case manager who has helped him find stable housing, vocational training, and services to help him develop parenting skills. Ramon has worked with Escondido Education COMPACT to become self-sufficient through employment and job readiness services and he completed the Vista Community Clinic Dad’s Club. He now has a job at a local restaurant and was recently promoted to a line cook position.

Ramon says that Recovery for Life has provided him with a “link to resources I wasn’t aware of in the past” and he describes the staff as “another family that supports my recovery.”

Today Ramon continues to work hard towards his goal of building a stable life that enables him to regain custody of his children.

OUR IMPACT:

The goals of Recovery for Life are to build skills for self-sufficiency; improve wellness (physical, mental and emotional); and establish a support network to maintain recovery and self-reliance. Program treatment length ranges from 3 months to 12 months.

Recovery for Life is a relatively new program and has already screened over 1,000 clients to date.
