Director of Finance and Accounting

Under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Fiscal Director is responsible for developing and directing the quality, timeliness, cohesion, and efficacy of the Fiscal Department.  They will supervise 6 direct reports and manage all aspects of the agency’s financial transactions and records, from A/P authorization to Single Audit completion. They will serve as a thought partner to the COO and as a critical member of the management team responsible for strategic decision making.  Further, the Fiscal Director must establish and maintain excellent working relationships with a wide array of internal and external colleagues.

Specific Activities
  • Establish and maintain the overall direction and strategic initiatives for the Fiscal Department.
  • Compile budget data and analyze budget vs. actual monthly by cost center, department, and the organization as a whole. Provide analytical reports to program managers and executive staff.
  • Strategize and assist the COO with short and long-term financial goals for the organization, including risk management and cost allocations.
  • Prepare financial projections by coordinating budgets, expenses, and forecasting variables.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, Finance Committee reports and dashboards that reflect key performance indicators.
  • Facilitate internal, programmatic, and organizational audits.  Take steps to resolve any findings and promote better preparedness.
  • Overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll transmittal. 
  • Implement intentional cross- training amongst staff.
  • Monitor GAAP/FASB/OMB compliance and relevant practices are followed at all times by all staff.
  • Supervise 6 direct reports and host recurring Fiscal Team Meetings.
  • Facilitate recurring fiscal meetings with department heads to review their cost centers’ status.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training of fiscal staff.
  • Monitors staff productivity and provides constructive feedback and coaching.
  • Prepares and conducts staff performance reviews annually or as needed and ensures adherence to agency policies and procedures including disciplinary protocols if the need arises.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related field (MA/CPA preferred) Minimum 5 years’ experience in non-profit accounting operations experience, to include:
  • solid experience with fund accounting and shared cost allocating
  • experience managing a high volume of diversified funding sources (government & private)
  • experience with robust corporate accounting software (proficiency in Sage 300 or Sage Intacct a plus)
  • thorough knowledge of GAAP, FASB, and OMB Super Circular
  • 5 years supervisory experience with multiple direct reports
  • Ability to type 50 wpm, with accurate spelling and grammar; 10-key by touch
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills, problem-solving skills, and decision-making skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Complete work in a neat and timely fashion, with exceptional attention to detail
  • Must be flexible, a team player, and able to multi-task to address shifting priorities

Other Requirements
Reliable transportation. Must have a California driver license and good driving record. Willing to use own, properly insured, reliable vehicle for the job (mileage reimbursed). Employment subject to clearances, including background finger printing checks, driving record, tuberculosis testing, and drug testing.

Exempt position.  $95,888+ to start, DOE. Differential pay offered for bilingual skills. EEO.

Work Schedule
Exempt, Full-time, 40 hours a week- Monday – Friday- Flexible hours (may include evenings and weekends).
